Here is a series of singular cases, each tied to circumstances that are, at the very least, surprising.
2001 – Bernd-Jürgen Brandes
Killed and partially consumed by Armin Meiwes in a consensual act. The case inspired the metal band Rammstein’s song Mein Teil.
2003 – Jürgen Möllemann
A German politician involved in multiple scandals, he died during a parachute jump on the same day his parliamentary immunity was lifted. His death is considered a possible suicide.
2003 – Timothy Treadwell
An environmentalist known for living among grizzly bears in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. He and his partner Amie Huguenard were killed by a bear. Werner Herzog’s documentary Grizzly Man recounts his story.
2005 – Kenneth Pinyan
Died following an extreme and fatal act involving a horse. The case sparked legal and ethical debates in the U.S.
2006 – Steve Irwin
The Australian TV host and wildlife expert, famous for The Crocodile Hunter, was fatally injured by a stingray while diving near the Great Barrier Reef. The footage was destroyed at his family’s request.
2007 – Jennifer Strange
Died from water intoxication after participating in a radio contest to win a Wii console, which involved drinking large amounts of water without urinating.
2009 – David Carradine
American actor, found dead under circumstances linked to a sexual practice. The case drew widespread media attention.
2010 – Mike Edwards
Cellist for Electric Light Orchestra, died when his car collided with a 600 kg hay bale that had rolled down a hill.
2010 – Vladimir Ladyzhensky
Died shortly after losing the final round of the World Sauna Championships. His opponent was hospitalized in critical condition.
2010 – Jimi Heselden
Owner of the Segway company, died after falling off a cliff while riding one of his own vehicles.
2010 – Bobby Farrell
Lead singer of Boney M, died in Saint Petersburg on December 30 — the same date and city associated with Rasputin, the subject of one of the band’s most famous songs.
2011 – Philip A. Contos
Died in a motorcycle accident while protesting mandatory helmet laws. Doctors stated he would likely have survived had he worn a helmet.
2011 – Marius Els
A former South African army major, killed by the hippopotamus he had tried to domesticate over several years.
2012 – Elizabeth Watkins
A 24-year-old field hockey player, fatally struck by a ball during an official match in Australia. She collapsed immediately and could not be revived.
